Signed England shirt raises funds for school team
An England football shirt signed by the England players including the likes of Wane Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling was auctioned by automotive company Greenhous, at the Halls Auction Rooms in Shrewsbury to raise funds for Mount Gilbert School in Telford. Greenhous are supporters of the Mount Gilbert School through sponsorship provided by the Vauxhall Youth Football Programme.

Jo Jones, the Greenhous Vauxhall Football Champion, takes up the story. “Last year I attended the Telford and Wrekin Schools and Colleges Football Association school’s finals and Mount Gilbert were represented. They played really well, but I couldn’t help noticing that they had a borrowed kit and it was in really bad condition. As Football Champion I put the school forward to the Vauxhall Youth Football Programme for a gift of a kit. This was accepted and the team took ownership of their new Greenhous Vauxhall kit at an AFC Telford conference match earlier in the season.

“I then entered a competition run by the Vauxhall Youth Football Programme to win a signed England shirt and won! The next step was to take the shirt to the school and show it off to the children. They were delighted, especially having their photographs taken with it and finding each of the stars names on the shirt. I said we would auction the shirt and the proceeds would go to the school team. The shirt raised a fantastic £320!

“The school has benefitted from the Greenhous and Vauxhall sponsorship and for the children it has been a positive experience. Having Greenhous show an interest in their team, by supporting them and getting to know the players we have helped improve their confidence, whilst at the same time showing our commitment to working for the good of our community. Greenhous are already very much involved with local grass roots football across the county of Shropshire through our links with the football associations and schools football. We are grateful that the Vauxhall Youth Football Programme has allowed us to focus on an individual team. We look forward to watching them in the finals next week wearing their new kit.”

Mount Gilbert teacher, Adam Spellman said: “Everyone at Mount Gilbert has received a massive boost from the efforts that Greenhous Vauxhall have gone to in helping make school football that little bit more enjoyable. For the pupils to play each game wearing their own school kit has been great for their self-esteem and confidence on the pitch. Having their photographs taken with the signed England shirt was an experience that I’m sure none of the pupils will ever forget and on behalf of myself, the school and the pupils of Mount Gilbert, I would like to thank everyone at Greenhous Vauxhall for the amazing amount of money raised. We hope to use it to buy some much needed gym equipment to keep the team (and all pupils at Mount Gilbert) fit and healthy.”
