Expanding marquee firm takes on a new Nissan Navara
JFT Marquees and Tarpaulins Limited operate from a large premises on the Wem Industrial Estate. Growth in the business has led joint directors Alan James and Dave Hancocks to invest in a new Nissan Navara Tekna automatic from Greenhous Nissan in Shrewsbury.

Dave and Alan were involved with JFT Marquees when it was originally based in Prees in 2007. An opportunity to purchase Shrewsbury Tarpaulins came about in 2010 and, looking for larger premises, the company moved to the Wem Industrial Estate in March 2013.

Dave explained that the business used to be seasonal, but not anymore: “We had most of our marquee business in the summer months and the tarpaulin side dominated the winter period, however, now we operate both all year round.  I have just taken an order for a marquee for a Christmas function.”

The company will cater for any size of tarpaulin order from large scale covers for farming purposes to curtain sides for trucks and even down to smaller specialist uses.  As Alan says: “We use a heavy duty, durable gauge PVC for our tarpaulins.  They last so much better and are simpler to repair.  We recently had orders for canopies for over 500 pheasant pens and also provided parachutes for a gliding club to safely retrieve the towing hook attached to gliders. We work with the authentic types of canvas tarpaulin for vintage lorries and vintage military vehicles and we offer a repair service for all types of tarpaulin.”

Marquees can be provided in all sizes from the small show stand up to those accommodating 450 people.  Dave says: “We can provide the traditional wooden pole supported marquees or the aluminium framed ‘clearspan’ types.  We have worked in partnership with other marquee firms on large scale projects such as County shows where, for example, flooring and tables can be hired out.”

JFT bought the Nissan Navara to help tow their marquees around the county. Alan says they need a reliable workhorse that also looks professional.  Reflecting on why they chose the Navara, Alan disclosed: “I was very impressed with the customer service skills shown by Adam Beddin, the sales executive at Greenhous Nissan. He was interested in our business and allowed us to trial a manual Navara for three days.  When we returned and asked about an automatic version with a tow bar he took the time to go and collect one from Telford, and again we had it on trial for three days.  It has a 5 year warranty or for 100,000 miles which is ideal for our business.

“We employ two other staff and we are looking to take on another as business is growing.  In the summer season we employ a lot of temporary staff.”
